What is a music video?

What is a music video?

For our A2 Media course we have chosen to create a music video. A music video is a collection of images collaborated with a song to create a short film. Artists produce these short films for marketing purposes and to promote the sale of the music record.

A typical music video includes images of the artist performing the song and shots interpreting the lyrics. They are seen by the public mainly on television (MTV) or on the internet (YouTube), this means that people can view the video at any time creating a bigger image, advertising the song further.

Music videos use a wide range of styles of contemporary video making techniques, including animation, live action filming, documentaries, and non-narrative approaches such as abstract film. Some music videos blend different styles, such as animation, music, and live action. Many music videos interpret images and scenes from the song's lyrics (i.e. Bruno Mars’s lazy song). Other music videos may be without a set concept, for example they could just be filming the live performance.

As a group we chose to create a music video, this is a challenge for us as the editing will be much tougher than what we are originally used to when we edited our thriller short film; for example making sure the lip sinking is in time with the actress’ movement. In conclusion making the music video will help broaden our filming editing skills and demonstrate new techniques.
