‘I got u Duke Dumont’ Analysis

Lyrics
Ask me what I did with my life,
I spent it with you
If I lose my fame and fortune
(Really don't matter)
As long as I got you, baby
Clap your hands y'all it's alright [x3]
As long as I got you, baby
Clap your hands y'all it's alright [x3]
As long as I got you
Ask me what I did with my life
I spent it with you
If I lose my fame and fortune
(Really don't matter)
As long as I got you, baby

Clap your hands y'all it's alright [x3]
As long as I got you, baby
Clap your hands y'all it's alright [x3]
As long as I got you
As the years they pass us by
(Years they, years they, years they)
We stay young through each other's eyes
(Each other's eyes)
And no matter how old we get
It's okay, as long as I got you, baby
Clap your hands y'all it's alright
As long as I got you, baby
Clap your hands y'all it's alright
As long as I got you, baby
Clap your hands y'all it's alright
As long as I got you, baby
Clap your hands y'all it's alright
As long as I got you, baby
As long as I got you [x5]

The lyrics at first glance seem to have no relevance to the video what so ever. The song illuminates a love story (i.e. the words ‘as long as I got you baby’) but when I look closer at the video I realise the man does not fall in love with a particular individual he is just generally partying and socialising with many different girls through his fantasy. As I examined closer I realised that the lyrics could in fact link to the story of his love with the goggles he is preoccupied through, for example as long as he has the goggles he will be fine, the goggles are there for his ‘baby’.
Camerawork
They have cleverly generated a camera angle which feels as though the audience is actually living the life of the actor. This would attract the target audience of teenagers and young adults as the majority have the desire to travel appealing to specific viewers. At the beginning of the video we see the man in his home in England. The camera filter is slightly darker and duller then the scene changes to paradise with the man in Thailand and the shot becomes a lot lighter. I believe they have done this to emphasise the happiness the man is feeling whilst in Thailand and the dark filter represents the dullness of being in England. There is also diagetic sounds of thunder and rain this gives a sense of intimacy for the viewers with the way they have used noises and camera work, I feel it is extremely successful in terms of drawing in the audience.

 Genre/mise en scene
The song ‘I got u’ by Duke Dumont is under the genre of deep house. The music video was released on the 19th February 2014 and was filmed in Thailand. They mixed the locations up and filmed between Bangkok and Phuket. All the experiences in the video you’d expect someone to have whilst travelling to that part of the world as it involves boat rides beach parties and bonfires. Women constantly appear in the video in bikinis looking towards the actor which is clearly expressing his sexuality; this would appeal typically to males linking to the younger target audience also.

The costumes are essentially everyday holiday clothes, this involves swimming shorts and bikinis meaning the actors are barley wearing anything which adds to a slight sex appeal they are trying to portray, this may be because the listeners to the song would typically be younger and the video is trying to relate to the viewers. Yet there is nothing out of the ordinary (you wouldn’t see people usually wearing on holiday) this gives the video a stronger effect on real life and helps us relate to the vibe.
Editing
The music at the beginning of the video is slightly muffled as if it hasn’t got going yet, then the sound picks up at 26 seconds as he enters the utopian universe. There is also emphasising on particular resonances interestingly there are diegetic sounds throughout the whole video for example when he jumps into the swimming pool we hear a loud splash as he enters the water, these water sounds carry on while he is swimming. This also happens when he is feeding the monkeys we hear the monkeys screeching.

The editing involves a lot of fast cut montages which are cut to the beat of the music. When we hear the beat of clapping, the images change with every clap. By doing this it helps establish the mood of the song which in this instance is a fast pace party feel. I also think they may have used fast cuts to tell a long story with in the music video, by fast cutting we see more of the things he does in Thailand. I feel the editing works very well.
